Calorie estimate

Based on the Pandolf load-carriage equation applied to the trail’s actual uphill and downhill segments, with a small age-related walking-economy adjustment. Numbers update as you adjust the inputs.

Uphill segments use Pandolf at the GPX-derived average uphill grade. Downhill is treated as level walking — Pandolf’s negative-grade output is unrealistically symmetric for hikers, so we don’t subtract calories on the way down. A walking-economy multiplier (~0.5% per year past 30, capped at +30%) accounts for the gradual decline in VO2max with age. The total also adds resting (basal) energy across your trip length in days — defaulted to the number of days this track spanned (elapsed, not moving time). Resting rate is estimated from body weight (~1 kcal/kg/hour). By default the carried load is averaged over the trip — your gear pack plus half of the consumables (food, water at 1 L ≈ 1 kg, and stove fuel) — since they’re eaten as you go. Untick Average consumables over the trip to instead use the full start-of-trip load (everything carried the whole way). Estimate only — actual burn varies with fitness, weather, pack distribution, and terrain.

Needle shows your start-of-trip load (the heaviest). Base = gear; food, water & fuel are consumables that burn down over the trip, so the average carried is lower. Guideline scales with body weight, age, height, your fitness level and this day trip.
